Is honesty really the best policy?

I pull into my complex yesterday afternoon from work and stop by the mail box to pick up my mail and noticed that i had a few netflix movies, so i was excited about the possiblity of some more movies to watch this weekend. i sit down at my desk, relax and start going thru my mail. I get to the netflix envelopes and i've got 3 of them. i open the first; X-Files, Season 8, disk 4. I open the second; The Princess and the Warrior. I open the third; Breakin' 2: Electic Bugaloo. I check over some of the magazines that came in the . . . what? Electric Bugaloo? Did i get that drunk this weekend?

No, but out of habit, i ripped thru the netflix envelopes, soon discovering that Ben Jameson, my neighbor, 2 doors down from me ordered the sequel in the oscar nominated, break dancing films. so here's my quandry. Do i take the movie to him, opened, explaining my mistake and politely hand him the film, all the time trying not to snicker? Or do i save him the embarassment of having anyone know he actually ordered the film knowing that i'll be snickering every time i see him in the parking lot? OR, do i just keep the movie and pretend it never happened? Not that EB was ever on my top 10 list. Or any list for that matter, but with netflix, if you haven't received your movies in 5 days, you just hit the website, tell them, and they'll send out another copy. Do i keep the copy for myself, saving all of us the embarassment (him ordering the film, me committing mail fraud, etc.) and just place it next to my copy of Drive (another equally questionable film that i have in my collection - one i keep with ignorant pride)?

as an aside to this issue, it instantly reminded me of my Tribes playing days. When the original game was released back in '99, i spent 2 years as a mapper for the game. To make a long story short, i ran a mapping website and subsequently won some awards for a few of the maps i built. My point here being? I had a lot of custom built maps that i used to test out before sending out to the community to add into circulation. My roommate, at the time, ran a server where we tested the maps and the server was called Breakin' 2: Electic Bugaloo. That name would make me laugh every time i joined the server. Good memories...

So, back to my problem. Do i return the film to netflix, return the film to my neighbor or keep it for myself. Is honesty important in this situation?

Honest is generally the best policy. Unless you're cheating on your significant other. Than lie like it's going out of style.
